valid visa status

My company applied for H1B at the beginning of 2009 , but it got rejected. I then switched to L1-A status (from L1-B). At the end of the year my company did a followup and the H1B visa got approved now.

My L1-A and H1B status are valid till 2011.

I want to stay in the L1-A status and not in the H1B status.

Please let me know if this can be done. If yes, what are the steps.

Leave the country before your H1B effective start date and enter back in L1. Otherwise from the "Valid From" date on your H1B I-94 your status will change to H1B and your employment in L1 will become illegal.
