My wife and I am in the US on H1. We are going to India for a visit in 2 weeks. My wife just realized that her passport expires in May. She needs to get her H1 visa stamped at the counsulate in India and will have less than 6 months of time remaining on her current passport. We dont have time to get a passport in the US as it takes atleast 10 working days.

How long does it take to get a new passport in India?
Can she apply for a visa date on her current passport?

>>> She can. However, she might get a visa and/or I-94 only till the passport expiry. In which case, you will need to apply for extension before the I-94 expires even if the petiton is valid longer than that.
