Volunteer work on H1 visa

I am a physician employed by a private practice on a H1 visa. I want to work as a research volunteer at a Children's hospital in my city. This will be an unpaid position where I will work 2-3 days a week. Are there any legal restrictions to doing this? I am maintaining my legal status on H1 through my employer.
