H1B to H4 - Grace Period

Hello - I am currently on H1B visa and going to transfer my status to H4. I have already filled for my H4, but looking at current conditions, I don't think I will get it approved before I leave my current employer. Do I need to immediately leave the country as soon as I leave my employer who is currently holding my H1B?

No. You can stay in the US for as long as the Change of Status application is pending, even if you go out of status while it is pending.
