H1B validity

Hi All,
I have filed for my H1b in april 2008. However i have not planned to travel to US till date. Now I got a chance to go to Australia. I got to know through a friend that the H1b holder would require to travel within 3 years of filing the H1b application. Could you confirm if this is true? I am supposed to go on a long term trip to Australia and so unsure of what decision I have to take?

You need to use the petition before it expires (Check the petition for it's expiry date). If the petition gets expired, then you need to file a new H1B petition.
