H1 Visa expires in a few days. Can I work while green card app is in process?

I am currently on a H1B working visa, which expires on 9/30/2010. Last year I married and my husband is a US citize. We are currently working on the greencard application and about to submit the application. Do I still need to apply for a work permit? and if I do, how long would it take to be approved? Can I continue working?
