Holding on to an appointment slot despite interview waiver eligibility

I'm currently in the US and in some time I'll need an H-1B stamp in my passport. It'll be my first time (I was on F-1 OPT previously), so I booked a March appointment at the consulate. Later, a rule change ( https://travel.state.gov/content/tra...ant-visas.html ) made me eligible for an interview waiver. Due to my individual circumstances, I suspect I'll get the 221g letter if I try to use the dropbox, and get called for an interview. In these circumstances, is it possible for me to just use my existing interview slot thereby saving myself the time and trouble of going through dropbox and getting the 221g letter? Has anyone done this?
