H1-B work permit extension process requested

Hi i got H1-B Work permit stampped in 2008. Till now I did not travelled to US. My work permit is going to get expired in 16/July/2011. In Jan I am travelling to US. When should I Start my work permit extension process. I need to inform my employer to do necessary steps.

Can any one of you please suggest me the process.
