Passport renewal in India for H1B holder

Hi,

I am in India for past 7 months while holding a H1b visa. I need to renew my passport. But some people say that since I am a H1B holder, I should renew my passport in US as the present address is US address. Since I am in India for more than 6 months, Can I provide Indian address as present address and renew my passport in India?
