H1B Extension on expired Passport?

My Passport expired 9 months ago, I have applied for Passport renewal but the process is taking longer than expected. My H1B is expiring in the next 20 days, In case my passport doesn't arrive in time, can I apply for H1B extension

You must have a valid passport at the time an Extension of Stay application is filed. When your employer fills out the I-129, they will need to put your passport expiration date on it.
