I797s canceled in the last year??

Hello,

I left the US in May 2009 after transferring my H1 to a new employer (a consulting company). The validity date on the I797 from that transfer is until Dec 2011. It is now Dec 2010 and I am still in India and have not returned to the US yet. I have been informed that at some point in the last year or 2 USCIS canceled all such I797s and that my H1B may have been terminated without my knowing it, even though entering the petition number shows me the approval and when it was approved.

Is this true?

How can I know whether my H1 is still valid?

Unless your employer cancels it or the consulate does it at the time of visa approval, the petition remains valid.
