H1B renewed problem with i94

I just got renewed but now my employer says that I must go out of USA and came back in order to renew my i94. he says that its a requirement from USCIS and I have to do it with in 90 days otherwise my status become illegal and I might not able to work anymore.

I thought its optional, why I must renewed my i94.
I dont need to travel.
please advice what to do.

Do you currently have a valid I-94 with you? Did your H1B renewal come with a new I-94? Check this with your employer first. If the H1B renewal has come with a new I-94, then you are good. Get that I-94 and attach it to your passport. You don't need to leave the country and re-enter. If the H1B renewal hasn't come with a new I-94, then you must leave the country and re-enter to get a new I-94 at the POE that matches your petition expiry date (You will need a valid H1B visa to re-enter). If you don't have a valid I-94 with you now, then you should exit the country immediately. There is no such thing as 90 day period.
