Hi,

I am on H1B visa and my visa expires August 2011. Can I travel in May 2011 and be back in 2-3 weeks before my visa expires? Is this doable and safe?

Yes. Why not? You can re-enter as long as your petition, visa and passport remains valid and you have enough doucments to prove that the job is still available for you. The I-94 will be issued only till the petition expiry date.
