H1B Expiring, Extension applied, no response yet

Hi,

My H1B will expire on 19th Sept, 2011. My extension was applied in June and I received I797C with a receipt data of June 8th, 2011. The application was processed under regular processing.

What are my options if I dont hear back anything until Sept 19th, 2011? Can I still work considering that the case is pending?
