Layoff after H1B but OPT period still in effect

I have just got approval for H1b in month of November (was filled in August). Now if I got layoff and my OPT Period is still left (will expire in April 2012) can i utilize that OPT Period for job search and be in valid status?
When will my H1B in effect?

Your OPT is tied to your F1 visa. I would think once your status changes from F1 to H1, the OPT will be no more!
