i797 was not returned after H1 interview

I got my visa approved and got the passport stamped. But the original i797 form was not returned by the officer.

Just checking if I have to call them up and remind.

Yes. You need that when you enter U.S to show at the POE.

I contacted the consulate, they checked and replied that they do not keep originals there, and that I can travel with a copy (which I have).

Hope I won't need it elsewhere.

Which VISA it was(L/H) and which consulate? How did you contact them, I also need to speak to Chennai Consulate,can some one please let me know if you have any direct contact number?

Mine is an H1 and my wife and kids H4.

I'm talking about the Chennai counsulate. The interview was in Window no:21 and the officer requested for the i797 specifically from me and I handed over. But he didn't return it. I wasn't aware that we needed it back.

You can contact the helpdesk number but they will most likely give you the standard reply and ask you to contact via email. I sent an email with all the details possible, and they replied that "We do not keep originals here, so you may travel with the copy."

I'm not sure if I will need the original elsewhere now. Confused!

Original approval notice is required at the POE (Some officers may not be okay with a photocopy), to get SSN and at the DMV.
