Urgent help needed on passport surname correction

Dear Members,

I read many passport related threads but i didn't find relevant answer for my case, so posting a new thread. In my passport surname field is blank. H1b petition was filed under 2013 cap with out surname. My employer asked me to change the surname in the passport by the time H1b result come and only if i get my current passport back along with the new passport with surname.

I want to know whether name difference in passport and H1b petition will cause any problem(rejection) for H1 visa, at the time of stamping in india{mumbai consulate}? or can i change the surname in passport after visa is stamped?

My surname in passport is blank.
My surname is ABCD(name changed)
Name : XYZ
10th class: XYZ
Othr Educational docs : XYZ A

I am in great confusion whether to proceed and correct surname in passport or not. Please someone guide me on this. Many thanks in advance.

How it is printed in passport exactly (not the correct name)

If it is in passport

Surname - BLANK
Name - ABCD XYZ

then change it to

Surname - XYZ
Name - ABCD

This wont cause any issue.

Get the name changed in the passport. When you go for stamping, carry both the passports. When you will DS160, fill it as per the name in your new passport. Having a blank surname will create a lot of unnecessary issues while you applying for SSN, driving license etc in U.S.

I too had the same issue with my passport and have got the name bifurcated on my passport. Now that i have the new passport with new Passport# (The old passport was handed over to the Passport office), i was just wondering what to tell the Consulate guys about all this turmoils?

You can always get the H1B petition amended with the correct name (as it appears in your passport) and go for the visa interview with the amended petition.

Hey Siva,
I didn't get my passport back. They will issue the new passport only after u handover the previous one. I spoke to my Company people here, they say it wont create any problem. Make sure u have xerox/scanned copies of ur old passport (In case if they ask).

In which passport office you got the new passport? When I enquired an agent in pune(India) passport office he told that I will get my current passport (canceled) back along with new passport. Is this incorrect?

First go and ask your employer with what name they applied for your H1b visa and LCA. Means whether they given any surname or they left it as a blank.

If they given the first name as blank then it will appear as FNU in your visa. Generally they use to specify some surname and then they are passing the same name to attorney and then they requesting the candidate to change the name in your passport.

If they did not specified any surname in your h1b processing then tell him that if you will add the surname then it need to amend the h1b visa and lca also they will only take care.

Dont worry whether you have surname in your passport or not that will not cause any issue on USCIS approval. You will ask to provide a surname when you will be in USA while getting the SSN, DL etc.

While applying they asked me to give name same as passport. I will confirm with employer whether he had mentioned any surname or blank.

Hi Siva,
I got this done from Lucknow Passport Office. This is what i was told. Dont worry - even if you dont have your old passport, it won't put u in any sort of trouble. I have checked with people having the same problem.

I also have this surname issue, can you let me know how should i fill it in form as my name on pasport is ABCD XYZ and surname field is blank. Now I have got a form from my employer to fill in as per the passport it has three fields First name, middle name and last name, let me know how should I break ABCD XYZ as i'll also get it corrected after filing the petition. Please reply soon as I have to give that form EOD.
