  • Resident Alien card received in 1984. Can I apply for green card now?

    Hi,

My Aunt and Uncle have been permanent residents of the U.S. since 1980, and they had applied for Family-based green card (permanent resident) for my mother, and us since 1984. We had visited the US in 1984, 1986, and 1988. My sister and I have Resident Alien cards as minors from 1984 with our mother as the guardian. After that, we had visited the US in 1992 for our cousin sister's marriage on B1 visas. Again, I went to do PhD in the US on F1 visa, and was later given H1B by my employer. However, I surrendered my H1B visa, and returned to India in 2010. I visited the US again in 2012 on J1 short term scholar visa and returned after 2 months.

This Resident Alien cards of my sister and mine was almost like discovery of a treasure after a long time. My question is whether these cards are of any use to my sister and me if we want to apply for US citizenship in the future. Does it have any value?

Again, my history of visit to the US -
1984 (stayed for three months),1986 (stayed for two months),1988 (stayed for three months),1992,2005-2010,2012. It is to be noted here that our Application for Issuance of Permit to reenter the United States was denied when an appeal was made in 1988 because we were not staying in the US for more than two-three months and were returning to India for two/three years.

    My sister -
    1984,1986,1988,1992.

I am now settled in New Delhi, India. Can anyone suggest me of any immigration lawyers in India who will be able to help me out?

I will look forward to your reply.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Tilottama
