  • Drivers license and Visa Extension in VA

    Hi,

I have a valid drivers license till 08/08 and my Current Visa is also expiring on the same day. I have applied for an extension, but I haven't received the approval till now. I tried to get a my DL extended, but the DMV said they need the approval notice and will not be able to extend my DL till I get my Visa extension.

Anyone been in this situation? Please help..

Almost no DMV or MVS in United States ...

... will now renew any driver's license unless the applicant's status is absolutely cleared and will original documentary proof.

Sorry friend, until your visa is cleared they will not help you and you'll be wasting your time.

Just hoe to get your approval in time and you'll be able to renew your driver's license.

As a backup you may want to plan ahead, just in case.

    Good luck.

Thank you for the reply my friend.

I have another approval notice which is valid till 2010, but I have not joined that employer. Will I be able to use that approval notice just to get the Driving license? Will the DMV notify INS that I used it to get my DL?

Also, I have a international drivers license which is still valid for 3 more months. Can I use it to drive? I know IDL is valid in VA for 6 months.

          That's one tricky ...

... situation. If you held a state driver's license and it expired then you're obligated to renew it and not use the international driving permit.

You'll be in a much deeper situation if you're stopped and you claim that your legal residential status has not cleared due to which you could not get the driver's license renewed.

Get it? That means you're out of status and illegally living in United States. Imagine the consequences.

VA police are getting more and more strict and it depends on that particular officer's discretion.

I would not advice you to go that route.

          Good luck.
