While I was a student in the US, I accepted a job off campus and used my social security number. I married a US citizen and I would like to apply for adjustment of status. Will I be able to adjust my status and remain in the US while processing and what are the penalties for such an act?

Your illegal employment is forgiven, but do not hide it or lie about it, make sure you list it in the g-325a and any other forms that ask for it.
