  • Bank Refused to Add Wife to My Account

My wife recently received her "Employment Authorization" card. Today, I went with her to my bank to have her name added to my checking account. The bank refused to add her, saying that she must have a Social Security number to have her name added to my account.

How can my wife cash her paycheck? She worked for a private individual a few weeks ago and received a paycheck. Not only did my bank refuse to add her to my account, they also refused to cash her check, inspite of her having ID.

Is there any way for a legal immigrant with a valid Employment Authorization card to cash a personal check? It seems terrible that legal immigrants who have their employment authorization cards cannot even cash their paychecks.

I was hoping that by adding my wife to my account, that it would demonstrate co-mingling of assets. I feel so frustrated!

Thank you for any help you can provide in this regard.

Take the EAD to SSA office, get a SSN first. All banks need SSN or at least a tax id number to open/add a person to an account after the patriot act.

I am not a lawyer and you need to consult with one to validate any info posted on the forum and discuss your case specifics. H1b Question? Read the FAQ first.
