How to get resident application #?

My mother who is a citizen did a petition for my sister who lives in El Salvador but she lost the application papers and now we cant find the status of application without the number. Does anybody knows how to find out what is her number only with her name to check her status?

You can call the USCIS and ask them for a receipt # for the case. She will have to reveal her name, her information, and an approximate time of when the petition was filed. They should be able to bring up her records.
