Travel to India without Passport Renewal

Hi,

I am traveling to India on the 9th January 2012 and returning to US on the 31st Jan 2012 on L-1 Blanket Visa.

The concern that I have is that my passport is expiring on the 25th of June 2012. I was told by my colleagues that travel to India is not advised before 6 months of passport expiry date. Can I travel and return by Jan 31 2012 or will the airlines or US immigration someone cause objection during my return?

• The date of expiry of my L-1 Visa is 06th May 2013 and
• The date on my I-94 is 8th Oct 2013

Can you advise me if I need to do which one of the following?

1. Is it fine if I travel to India and renew my passport after I return to US?
2. Should I renew my passport in US before I go to India? If I renew my passport before I go to India, will I have to go for Visa stamping in India on the New passport or the visa on the old passport is still valid during my travel?

I have a similar question as in the original post in this thread. My Indian passport expires on Oct 5th 2013, and my H-1B visa expires on Oct 15th 2013 (I will be initiating the process for an additional 3-year H-1B in early April). I intend to travel to India around Apr 10th 2013 for about 10 days. Would I need to renew my passport before I travel? Looking at the response below, it appears that I can travel without renewing my passport (and can renew my passport once I return in late April). Am I right? If so, would anyone be able to point me to documentation in some government websites that I can print out to show someone in case I am stopped at immigration points in India or US? Please help. I am mainly asking this question in reference to the 6-month validity rule that I hear from some people. Kindly share your advice.
