How to get ITIN number?

Hi,

My wife is coming to USA in december.
I want to apply for her ITIN number.
How to get ITIN number without sending original passport to IRS?

IF i apply through ITIN acceptance Agents, Do I still need to send original passport or other original document to IRS , Or I just need to show original documenst to agent, and he/she will varify it and send only application to IRS?
