  • USA Tax filing

    Hi.

I am permanent resident married to an US citizen. Came to USA in Sep 2012 and zero income until end of 2012. Before coming to USA i was employed in India and the tax was deducted by my employer. Tax filing is not yet completed in India since the financial year is not over yet. I was here in USA in 2011 and before and the respective year tax filings were completed on time. Do I need to file tax here in USA for the year 2012 though I have not earned any money in USA in 2012? If I need to file tax here in USA on my global income then how do i get the credit for the Income tax deducted from my Indian salary in India? My wife is employed in USA in 2012 and can she include me as dependent in her tax filing? Plse suggest.

You should file tax return in the US for 2012. You need to declare your global income in the US.

You should mention your foreign (India) income and the amount of tax you paid there. That is how you claim the credit so you don't have to pay the tax twice.
