Applying for SSN as a "Legal Alien Not Allowed to Work"

I'm currently studying in the US under an F1 visa. Recently, I have to get involved in a few processes with NON-government agencies that require a SSN; for instance, signing a contract with a cellular phone company, etc. So what types of documents are necessary in order to verify with the Social Security Administration that I need to be issued a SSN?
