US salary processing without SSN

I traveled to US in last week of February on H1B. I visited SSN office within 2 days to complete SSN formalities. I had to travel back to India within 7 days due to personal emergency. My SSN card is not received by my office. I gave office address fro SSN communication. I tried contacting SSN office about SSN number but they need me to visit SSN office in person with all documents. I am in India and cannot visit the SSN office.

Now my company says they cannot pay me salary as I do not have SSN. I will not be travelling to US soon. I do understand that company needs SSN number for tax purpose. But is there any way that company can process the salary and pay the tax on the salary?

Employers need to pay employees for working. Period. No exceptions. Even illegal aliens.

What happens if you refuse or are incapable of providing them your SSN? They put 000-00-000 on your W-2. http://www.irs.gov/publications/p15/...link1000202306
