I read many articles but could not find an answer. Hope i can get an answer here.
My wife stayed with me in USA for 7 months in 2014 and left in December to India. Now, i need to apply tax returns for both of us. She has her passport in India, as i am travelling to India now, can i get her passport from India to USA with an authorization letter and send it to IRS for ITIN number for my spouse. I have consulted a tax consultant and they say it is legal and i can send the passport to IRS office though she is not in USA. Will IRS accept this? Moreover, i can give the passport to my wife when i go to india to bring her back.
