Missing Documents

For around 50 years my mother has had a birth certificate and social security number. She came across fraud and hired a private investigator to find out who was using her information. The investigator discovered that for 50 years, my mother has been using someone else's information. The birth certificate that she has had all these years is this other person's.

She has no living relatives. She has other records when she was young. What she does have is my siblings and my birth certificates and her marriage certificate.

What can we do?

Perhaps one line of inquiry for the private investigator is the homes where she grew up, their ownership, and public records available as to its owners and any birth certificates available in the surrounding counties involving the homeowners
