Hello everyone,
As I have not found anyone able to help me at my University, I hope someone here might be able to help me.
I came to the US in January 2019 on a J1 Visa. Before anyone told me anything about taxes etc. I had to decide whether or not I wanted to claim tax treaty benefits on my W-8 BEN and WH-1 forms. As I know now, I don't have to pay FICA taxes in the US and also have to pay state taxes even when claiming tax treaty benefits. This plus a change in my family's income situation would make it a lot more expensive for me to file my taxes in my home country (about 2-3 times as much as I have to pay here).
Therefore my question: Can I still file my taxes in the US rather than my home country? I know I'd probably have to pay a fee for not having the taxes withdrawn from my stipend and therefore paid on time, but that would still be more than worth it. If I can, do I have to do something special or can I simply file and pay my taxes in the US and report them in my home country?
I hope someone can help me out with this
Best regards
Nils
