Obtaining the social security number after application(faster)

A long time ago I think I saw that after you apply for your SS you could go back after a couple days and request a "proof" of the social security.
I'm asking this because a couple of my friends did their application last friday, but their are trying to get cable/internet, cellphone plan, but everything need the SS#
Does this information proceed, if so what exactly should they do to get at least the SS# while they wait for the cards?
