  • Need help with my W-4

    Hi,

I landed in US on May 8 2011. I'm asked to fill out a W-4 form to get my 1st salary. Need your help in this regard.

    My Details:
    1. Single
    2. Working in only 1 job.
    3. State: Pennsylvania

    My Doubts:
    1. Am I the head of the household?

    2. Enter an estimate of your 2011 itemized deductions. These include qualifying home mortgage interest, charitable contributions, state and local taxes, medical expenses in excess of 7.5% of your income, and miscellaneous deductions. (For 2011, you may have to reduce your itemized deductions if your income is over $159,950 ($79,975 if married filing separately). See Worksheet 2 in Pub. 919 for details.)

What do I fill for this since I dont know what my state and local taxes are?

    3. Under Deductions and Adjustments Worksheet,
    Enter:
i)$ $11,400 if married filing jointly or qualifying widow(er)
ii) $ 8,400 if head of household
iii) $ 5,700 if single or married filing separately

Should I choose ii) or iii) since I am single and hence qualify as Head of the household too?

    4. Enter an estimate of your 2011 adjustments to income and any additional standard deduction. (Pub. 919)

    What do I fill here?

Thanks for taking the time to read and help.

Your total number of exemptions will be 1. You don't have to fill the numbers such as itemized deductions etc.

You can ask your HR department for further help on this.

      Immihelp is right

Immihelp is right. The instructions for form W-4 are confusing and they often result in the wrong amount of withholding, even if you follow them. Try thinking of the status "head of household" as a single income provider caring for a child. You are simply "single" with one allowance. The withholding tables will take care of the rest. If you over-withhold, you can get the money back in a tax refund when you file your tax return.
