  • Filing Tax for Spouse- F1

    Hai,
I have a question about filing taxes. I am on F-1 status currently (in OPT) . I got married in the month of November 2011. My wife joined me recently in Feburary 2012.

I am trying to file taxes for the year 2011. I did contact a Tax Consultant and came to know that I can file taxes for my wife too. I clearly told him that my wife didn't stay here last year. But the consultant told me that i can still file taxes on behalf of her as i was married last year.

I am not sure if i really have to file like that. Any response will be highly appreciated.

    Thank You

Yes, you can claim yourself as married and file tax returns for the entire tax year 2011. As an F1 student you need to file taxes as a non-resident.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.
