Hi All,
Wanted to share the experience of my husband's L1 extension. He went to Toronto to get his L1 petition (blanket) extended, which we got without sweat. After the consulate interview, while he was still in Toronto we realized that the airport authorities had not taken his I-94 while leaving US (which typically happens while travelling from US to Canada). We went into a panic mode thinking about the possibilities of an extended I-94 not being issued (I desperately needed that document for my EAD renewal) after arrival back in USA since his earlier I-94 was not taken at departure. What added to our problem was quite a few reports in the internet implying that my husband should have deposited his I-94 before leaving for Canada.
We were pleasantly surprised to know that there is a US immigration counter at Toronto airport departure terminal. They checked my husbands extended petition approval, ASKED FOR HIS OLD I-94 and issued him a new one for the extended duration. They told him that they do this only in cases where a traveler still has his old I-94 with him and don't entertain cases where I-94 has been submitted at the US departure port.
The crux here is its okay if you don't submit your old I-94 at US airport while travelling to Toronto for visa renewal, please hold on to it and present it to the custom authorities in Canada for a I-94 renewal. Lots of misleading topics in internet on this query, so thought to clear it out for anybody undergoing a similar situation like we did and to avoid panic situations.
