  • L-2 Visa extension for those not in the US

My father currently holds an L1B visa. There are four of us in the family. Originally, our visas were gonna expire this June 10, 2013. My parents' and my younger brother's visas have already been extended since they reside in the US as of writing. I am currently an undergraduate student here in the Philippines so I they weren't able to apply for my visa's extension in the US. I go to the US around once or twice per year to stay with my family so having that visa is also important for me. Since I currently am in the Philippines, would it be possible for me to extend my L2 visa here in the Manila Embassy? Would there be any penalties for applying for an extension after its expiration date (June 10, 2013)? Also, how long would it take for the extension to be accomplished and would they need to keep hold of my passport?

I really hope you could help me out. I am in to a lot of time constraints as of the moment. I will be out of the country a couple of weeks every now and then this semester for some international academic conferences for my university. I cannot afford not to have a passport until December of this year.

Yes, you can apply for your L2 Visa without any problem.
This is my opinion and not legal advice.
