Working on expired EAD

Hi! I am on L2 visa and have an EAD. I am currently working, my EAD expires on 8th June, I have already filled for renewal last month. My lawyer said I would receive my new EAD before the expiration. But I am just getting a little concerned. Am I allowed to work after my EAD expires till I receive my renewed EAD?
If not, how should my employeer handle this? Some friends suggested being on a official leave till the time I get my EAD and not being paid for this tenure.

What your friend is suggested is the right thing.

You can't work and/or get paid while after the first EAD expires and you are waiting for the next EAD to be approved.
