Can you apply for EAD as soon as your L2 is appoved?

I am currently on J1 but my L2 application got approved as of 09/01/2013. Can I already start filing based on this approved L2 status for EAD?

Especially since there is a question in the EAD application form about my current visa status, where I would have to put J1, but I would be actually applying already based on my L2 status...

You will only be able to apply on or after 9/1/2013 since that is the effective date of your status.

It does sound logical in one sense (that is my application should be based on my L2 status), but in the other sense that means that people on an L2 are bound to be out of work for 2-3 months...which does not really make sense for me...

If you apply now, they may assume you are requesting EAD based on J-2, which is allowed so your EAD may be shortened to the j-1 validity instead of the L-2 validity.
