  • L1B extension - how far in advance

    Hi All

Does anyone know how far in advance you can apply to extend your L1B visa. The application would be done via the US embassy in London.

HR in my company are saying it cannot be done until after the expiry of the initial L1Bs - but I'm sure that's not right?

If you can apply in advance could someone point me to any official document saying this that I could forward to HR?

    Thanks!

Where are you currently located? When is your L1B expiring?

Hi raghvi. Thanks for the response.

Currently located in NYC. L1B is expiring in March. Would want to renew it in US embassy in London.

        Thanks!

When so many folks are wanting to avoid visa stamping for fear of rejection, any particular reason why would you want to risk it by going for stamping ahead of visa expiry?

This is my opinion not legal advice.

Hi Raghvi. For now I was just hoping to understand my options - do you know if it is possible to apply for an extension in advance?

Extension is for extension of stay in US. It only allows you to extend stay in US, it doesnt get you a new visa stamp. Also, extension approval while in US doesnt guarantee a successful stamping so it hardly makes sense to apply for extension and then leave US and attend visa stamping.

I'm not sure I really follow. Let me give you a bit more detail:

                1. My original L1B visa is for 3 years and this expires in March 2014.
                2. I have been in and out of the country several times so I have stamps in my passport going into 2016. I understand that this means I can continue to work in the US after March 2014.
                3. However my understanding is that unless I extend my L1B visa I am not able to leave the US and come back in? Therefore I want to apply for this extension.
                4. I plan to apply for the extension at the US embassy in London.

My question is whether I can apply for this extension before March 2014? If so would it be possible to point me to the document that says this is possible?
