Resigning with an L1 Visa and coming back with ESTA

hi all,
I made some research on this very helpful forum but couldn't find a comparable case.
I am on an L1 Visa. I accepted a job offer back in Europe, and I am resigning from my current job in the US in December. I am flying back to Europe on December 20th. However, I previously planned holidays in the US for the week of NYE (Dec 28th to Jan 4th).
My question is: can I travel to the US with a valid ESTA (I checked and I am elegible for ESTA) for which I will apply right after my L1 becomes invalid (= as soon as I am not on a US payroll anymore)? or is one week of "break" between the 2 Visas too short?
