  • EAD or SSN for L2 Tax

    Hello Experts

I am on L1 visa and my wife is on L2 visa. She has applied for an EAD card and it is in process. I have to file for my taxes jointly with her but for that she needs a SSN or an ITIN.

The last date for Tax return is 15 Apr and her EAD might take long and then it will be couple of more weeks for the SSN to get it in time for the last date.

    My questions are
    1. For a L2 visa holder, can SSN be applied, if the EAD is in process ?
    2. I read somewhere that If you apply for SSN without the EAD, the card might say 'Not authorised to work', is that true and then what are the consequences for that?
    3. Can an ITIN be applied for a L2 person in such a case and then can be rescind-ed after the SSN is there?
    4. Is there any other alternative to this problem?

    Regards

I got my SSN before I applied for EAD. I also knew a few L2 friends who does have an SSN but never applied for EAD. I didn't have any issue getting my EAD and been working for the past 3 years.
