L1 to F1 or B1/B2

Hi,

I am on L1 visa, got laid off recently and my last working day is Nov 11th. I am considering the below options to continue our stay in USA. ( i have my spouse and kid with me here)

1. Moving to F1 visa: How long it takes to move from L1 to F1 once the university accepts my application.
2. Since moving to F1 takes sometime, can we apply for visitor visa (B1/B2) from here without the need to go back to home country?
If that is possible, by when we are supposed to apply for visitor visa.
Is it possible to convert from B1/B2 visa to F1 with out any issues.
