L1B and L2 Visa extension with Passport Expiring

Hi,

I have L1B visa and my wife has dependent L2 Visa till Dec 2015 and we got I94 also till that date and are currently in USA
We have to apply for visa extension at around August 2015. The only problem is my wife's passport is getting expired on Jan 2016.

Can we apply for visa extension first without applying for passport extension for my wife? Will they check for passport expiry date for extension of L1B or L2B visa?

Yes, usually passport expiry date is an important factor and better to do passport extension first before visa extension.

You cannot get a stay extension beyond Passport expiry, hence advisable to get passport extended and then apply for stay extension.
