Question on L1B and I94 expiry dates

Hello,

My current situation
L1B expiry : Jan 07,2017
Passport Expiry : Aug 10,2017

I'm currently in India and will be traveling to US in April 2016 for an intended period of 1 year.
Considering this situation Can someone provide inputs on these 2 questions :

1) If i go in April, will the I94 be issued till Aug 10,2017 or Jan 07,2017 ?
2) In case i get an I94 till Aug 20,2017. Can I legally work on L1B while in the US from Jan 07,2017 onwards or is it mandatory to file for a L1B extension ?

It depends upon the CBP officer and whether your petition is blanket or individual. But you can certainly work all the up to whatever I-94 date they give you.
