Hey all.
Just signed up to ask a few questions.
My girlfriend and I aren't married, we're both 30. We've been together for 4 years and lived together for 3. Here in Canada, common-law is recognized pretty much the same as marriage. We always intended on marriage, but we've always agreed that $$ savings was more important in the immediate future. I'm being transferred to one of our other offices (voluntarily) in the US. Our company has many throughout the world. That process they know pretty well.
My question is pretty simple. We know that common-law can't carry over so we're fine with getting married, but with the move and wanting to buy a house shortly after moving, we don't want to dip into our savings to pay for wedding right now. We're just going to have a small thing at city hall.
We were reading that they require photos of the wedding etc... but it looked like that was geared more towards a foreigner marrying a local citizen. We're both Canadian and is it an issue for us to get officially married just a few months before transferring? It's a legit marriage and neither of us is American so it's not for any special benefits, its specifically so we can stay together obviously.
Anyone have any feedback on this scenario?
Thanks a lot in advance.
