Do we need to apply for a fresh L-1B due to change in role

Last year I got a L-1B which would be valid until 2019. However, legal HR team asking me to apply for a fresh L-1B again.

Is anybody aware of this? has anyone faced this kind of situation?

What's the expiry date on the I797? Did your employer go through an aquisition?

No, company is same. There is no acquisition happened since I got last L-1B .
Expiry date on i797 is unlimited...
