  • Making a case for L1-A

    Hello All,

    My company (A Fortune 20 company) is in the process of applying for a L visa on my behalf and I am trying to assess if I can push my case on the L1-A Functional manager route. I understand there are four key clauses I would need to demonstrate:

    - Manages the organization, department, subdivision, function or component;
    - Manages an essential function within the organization or department or subdivision;
    - Functions at a senior level within the hierarchy or as to the function managed; and
    - Exercises discretion over day-to-day operations of the function.

    Because my company is very large and I am in its management development program, I did three short rotations in different business units. While I managed a function, I did not have people report to me. I wanted to understand if:

    1. What is the level of scrutiny for evaluation. What type of proof is needed by USICS given my company is very large. Does it work against me, as I need to be very very senior in order to appear like a "manager" in context of the entire company? Does it also hurt me because I was in a "special" program within the company that wants to groom its future leaders, as it is not like a typical role?
    2. Are there any examples or best practices that I should be aware of?

    Thanks.
