Application Receipt/Petition Number in DS-160

Hi,

I am currently on L1 and my visa will be expired in Nov'2018. My employer has initiated renewal and I am now working on DS-160 which was partially filled by employer's immigration firm.

While reviewing details, I see petition number in DS-160 and when I check the status of petition number, I see it is approved.

Can any one help me understand what does that mean, as my understanding is I will be notified of the renewal status only at the consulate.

Guess I understood your question correctly. DS160 is an application form for the visa. Petition is an approval for your work. You can only apply for Visa once you have your petition approved.

As you mentioned, for my L1 visa which was processed initially, I had petition approved and submitted DS160 form for the visa. Now for renewal, my understanding is, we will get to know the renewal status only when we visit consulate. But while reviewing DS-160 which is filled by my employer attorney, I see the petition number which is approved. And I have not got any update from employer on this. So wanted to check,is there any way we can get extension approved first and then work on DS-160 for appointment at the consulate.

Now for renewal, my understanding is, we will get to know the renewal status only when we visit consulate.

No, you'll come to know petition status before the visa interview. You'll go for Visa interview only with approved petition.

So, your renewal petition is approved.

Ideally thats what is the sequence. May be your employer is lazy to let you know the petition approval status.
