1. Does L2 visa extends automatically with L1 or they also need to appear for an interview ??

2. Can L2 travel out of country if visa process is in extension. M planning to get in country after it is approved in Jan and will one out for 3 months while it is gone for extension

1. Does L2 visa extends automatically with L1 or they also need to appear for an interview ??

Visa is a physical document on your passport & cannot be renewed automatically. Once expired one can continue to stay inside USA, but for next entry in USA he/she will need to get it a new visa stamped on passport.

Though since it is a re-issue case, applicant can apply for Interview Waiver Program (IWP) aka dropbox.

L2 can certainly move out of USA while the visa extension is in process - however they cannot re-enter in USA with an expired visa.
