L1B Extension denied . COS to B2 via POE at mexico

My L1B extension has been denied and my I-94 Expires on 12/28/2018.

My Wife is working in US and i need to be here in US with her.

I have B1/B2 visa. Can I cross the country on L1 Visa prior to my I-94 expiry (preferably to Mexico - San Diego border) and enter the country on B2 visa?

Or should I be on B2 Visa when i leave for Mexico?

Yes, you can do so by leaving the country & re-enter with your earlier visa.
