L1 visa holder options for a job change

Good day - I currrently hold a L1 work visa, valid through July 2007, but have been laid off from the firm that hired me in the US. I am unsure as to what my options are for finding alternate work opportunities in the US and whether there is a time period allowed to be in the US until next employment is found. I do believe that I will now need to obtain a H1B visa from this next employer, but would appreciate your guidance on what I need to know and do to make this transition and be in-line with immigration laws.
